Meet Lowen B. Hold, your road-trip maestro, author of “Hit the Road: 100 Road Trip Games to Pass the Time,” and living time capsule of a simpler era.

Think of a mix between the Fonz, Marty McFly in “Back to the Future” and your favorite eccentric uncle who always made family gatherings more entertaining with his zany stories and infectious laughter.

Lowen grew up in the 70s and 80s, a time when roller skates were all the rage, big hair was in fashion, and the soundtrack of life was a medley of pop-rock, disco, and the first hints of hip-hop. He remembers those summer days, setting out on spontaneous road trips with friends.

All they needed was a beat-up old van, a map, a Polaroid camera, and a well-worn cassette tape of their favorite mixtape. Life was a highway, and they rode it all day long, the strains of Tom Cochrane and the Eagles filling the open air.

Trippin in ’82: A Cheeseburger Odyssey

A favorite memory of his is the legendary road trip of ’82. Lowen and his band of merry friends crisscrossed the states in a rusty but trusty Volkswagen Vanagon, all in the pursuit of finding the best cheeseburger in America.

Their secret weapon?

A game they invented called “Burger Bet,” where each member of the team took turns guessing the next town’s best burger joint based on the most fanciful clues.

The result? A lot of laughs, a few questionable cheeseburgers, and an unforgettable summer that still brings a twinkle to his eye.

Times were simpler then, and fun was something that was brewed in the cauldron of creativity and camaraderie, not downloaded from an app store.

Freewheeling fun on a dirt bike

Savoring the Flavor of Yesteryears

He yearns for those freewheeling, pre-screen times and laments the constant threat of boredom that seems to lurk around every corner of today’s world.

He wants to help reignite the fires of fun in today’s families, just like in the good ol’ days.

And so, with a potent blend of nostalgia, cheeky humor, and his ceaseless love for a good road trip, Lowen created “Hit the Road!”

His hope? To help families and friends break free from their screens, soak in the joy of the open road, and create memories that last longer than any device’s battery life.
